Absolution

In a cold room

with the lights off

my feet are bare my toes are soft

my sheets are crisp

and my candle scented

unlit wicks

and spinal fluid fermented

overturned remedies for age-old extremities

oak barrels and distilled spirits

do you remember these?

the longest distance between he and I

solutions no longer solving

resolutions finally resolving

sobriety filled with inebriation

and the absence of you, my liberation

I bow now in humble veneration

of other spirits, those worthy of libation

I drink a nectar, bitter and sweet

I revel in the taste of your retreat

my liver now clean and my river now pure

I can finally say, I am free of liquor
