Techniques for "Dealing with it"

Life throws a hardball our way. We, as functioning humans, are expected to take the hit and keep going, completely skipping the ‘dealing with it’ stage. That mentality is not healthy in the least. We need to release those bottled up emotions before they decided to release themselves in a less than ideal setting.

 

So, how do we deal, let go, let loose and release those emotions?

 

Consider trying out some of the techniques listed below and don't just settle for 'dealing with it'. 

 

1. Create a Soundtrack

 

This sounds completely insane. How can a soundtrack help to release emotions? Music has been studied by science, and it has a tremendous impact on our bodies. Consider the experts who tell pregnant women to play Mozart or Beethoven for their unborn babies. The rhythm and melody contain sound waves that elicit an emotional change. Take movie scores, for example. If you were to take the music out of horror movies, they likely wouldn’t be nearly as scary as they seem with the heart-racing background music that is chosen to enhance the scene. The same applies for your daily life. Tap into your inner director and select the scores that will help you to feel and deal.

2. Write it out

 

Writing can be extremely therapeutic, even if you think that you don’t have a talent for it (let's face it, you have a talent for it). Journaling is completely private and there isn’t anyone to judge you or your skill. A lot of emotion pours into writing. Poetry, for example, is one of the most well-known, emotional types of writing. There are pieces about love, pieces about loss. Pieces about anything, really. All you have to do is pick up a pen and release what you’re feeling down onto paper. Start with just writing your thoughts, don’t edit. Just write, write, write.

 

3. Full-on Embracing

 

This definitely isn’t the easiest of the options, but it is the boldest. Some people can’t deal with their feelings in any other way than simply dealing. They admit what’s bothering them and then let themselves feel, which is easier said than done.


It’s healthy to feel, it’s not something that makes you weak. Remember that.
