Balance Your Chakras and Chill Series: The Root Chakra

May 27, 2017

Energy: it's the entity that connects us to the Universe and to Source, not just the "thing" that charges and runs our electronics. Everything has a frequency, from the food you eat to the music you listen to. Energy can affect us in positive ways, but also in negative ways . Energy is in the essence of all things and humans are beings of ENERGY. With this knowledge, we introduce the chakras. Inside each and every one of us lie this system of energy that runs from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra has a specific purpose, and working together, they keep us as humans "going" with their energy. It is possible the chakras become somewhat or completely blocked. Contrarily, the chakras can become over-active, causing unrest, distress and even physical/mental ailments in our waking lives. The study of the chakras originated mostly from yogic traditions in India and has been Westernized over time. Over the course of seven weeks, we will introduce the chakras, in-depth, and in a series of seven articles. This particular article will cover the Root Chakra and give insight on how to balance it,  discuss the part of our body it governs, the color associated with it, and its affirmations.

Starting at the base of the spine is the Root Chakra, or "Muladhara," in Sanskrit. The Root Chakra is commonly associated with the perineum on the body, as well as the first three vertebrae of the spine. This chakra is associated with the color red, ranging from deep crimson to bright cherry. As the first chakra, the root rules basic security and needs, sense of self and grounding. The Root is what anchors us to Mother Earth, keeping us steady like a tree. If the Root Chakra is unbalanced or blocked, we may feel as though our lives are passing us by - a sense of monotony. We may also feel wildly ungrounded, or feel a lack of connection with ourselves causing illusions for ourselves. Other signs our Root Chakra is closed would be an eating disorders or excessive negativity to the point where one becomes cynical or very fearful about themselves or the world in general. This causes one to live out of fear and feel unsafe. However, someone who has an overactive Root Chakra may be greedy rather than fearful.

Balancing the Root Chakra can be done in a number of ways. Meditation is one of the best ways to activate the chakras. While meditating, sit upright so you do not fall asleep and begin with deep breathing. You may choose to listen to Root Chakra Tibetan singing bowls, which I have found extremely helpful (search for these on YouTube or SoundCloud. I recommend SonicYogi). Once you have fallen into meditation, begin to envision a ball of energy that is the brightest color of red. Visualize this energy and imagine you are physically being rooted into the ground like a tree. Continue this until you feel steady. Watch your roots wrap around the core of the Earth as you begin to feel one with the planet. Feel a wave of pure, red calm waft over you. Allow yourself to become one with the glorious ball of red energy. If you have a hard time doing this, do not give up: patience and practice will allow you to open each of the chakras. Go at your own pace. It may take time to make it past the visualization of color, or even the deep breathing, and that is perfectly fine. The Universe is not rushing you to heal yourself. You have showed up, and that is all that matters.

Another way the Root Chakra can be balanced is through writing affirmations. A few affirmations that I have found useful are, "I am safe in this world," and "I fully inhabit my body". On a simpler level, say "I am safe," "I am worthy," or "I am at home."

Crystals associated with the Root Chakra that I have felt a benefit from include Obsidian, Red Tiger's Eye, Smoky Quartz, Garnet and Jet Stone. Crystals can be worn or meditated with in order to enhance grounding or rooting. Red stones are particularly helpful in the visualization of red energy.

Stick with me through this seven-part series: Balance Your Chakras and Chill. We will explore other ways in which we can learn to ground ourselves through the magic of chakras.
