Starving Kids in Africa

There are starving kids in Africa and my friend tells me of her rape on Christmas Eve back when she still believed in Santa and how she waited for him to come down the chimney and save her. He didn’t.

There are starving kids in Africa and my roommate asks me if it counts as rape if she was passed out and he was her boyfriend. She doesn’t think so.

There are starving kids in Africa and my brother is in a child psychiatric ward. His hair is a mess of curls not brushed or cut making him look manic but his voice is quiet as he tells me if the tissues were rougher he’d use them to slit his wrists.

There are starving kids in Africa and no mom that doesn’t make your shitty chicken any less shitty.

There are starving kids in Africa and my teacher tells us eating disorders are a disgrace to God those indulging in them should apologize. I look at my friend whose ribs only just stopped showing and watch as she throws away her lunch.

There are starving kids in Africa and my aunt died on Thanksgiving. Her three children saw her lying in bed so they made their own lunches, packed their own backpacks, and got on the bus making sure to be quiet so as not to wake her lifeless body.

There are starving kids in Africa and some guy pretended to love my friend when she doesn’t love herself. He calls her at 2am and leaves her in his bed.

There are starving kids in Africa but that doesn’t stop the depression from leaking into my bones causing them to rot and wither.

There are starving kids in Africa and my neighbor’s father lives with her now as a walking corpse that tells the children he wishes he wasted away.

There are starving kids in Africa and senior year my mom asked me to use my fake ID to buy her another bottle. Tight lipped smile, I pretended this was normal.

There are starving kids in Africa but for some reason that doesn’t make me feel everyone’s pain any less.
