Some days, the battle to get out of bed can be too great (I know, a cliché line, but stick with me). Some days, the idea of getting dressed seems pointless. Some days, leaving the house is out of the question. Some days, we retreat from social connections, online and otherwise. These days are always accompanied by feelings of guilt, loneliness, and regret. We may let our responsibilities slip, we may forget to meet up with a friend when we were the ones who had planned it. Living with anxiety or depression can take such a large toll on life at times and can leave us in a vicious cycle of pain.
And you know what? That’s okay.
You can find countless articles suggesting that you ‘push through it’ and ‘think positive,’ but sometimes, that’s impossible. And that is okay. We are human and we certainly can’t be expected to be perfect all of the time. Sometimes, a little time off from daily life is just what the doctor ordered.
In a world ruled by responsibilities and time clocks, it’s important to remember to take care of your mental health as well as your physical health. Take a breather, a few days to yourself to just lounge around. You will get back up again -- you will survive. How do I know this? You’re still here. You’ve made it this far, you’ve survived everything that life had thrown your way so far, and you’ll continue to survive. Take life day-by-day, situation-by-situation. Be selfish and put yourself and your well-being first. Don’t be afraid to cancel that coffee date if need be.
We are at a turning point in our society that is really quite pivotal. Mental health awareness is finally on the radar for the general population, so now is the time to show everyone how to respond to these situations. Now is the time to set the standards for self-care. So take that day off, sleep in, wear your pjs all day. It’s okay. It really, really is. Don’t be afraid to take care of yourself for fear of judgement. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.”
